Varah Temple
Varah Temple is the largest and the most ancient temple
of Pushkar.
Varah -the Boar is the third incarnation (avtar) of lord
Vishnu.
Legend has it that Varah rescued the earth from the depth of
the primeval water. where it had been dragged down by a demon (Hirnayaksh).
The Gaznavid army first destroyed this temple in the reign of Arnoraja
(1123-50) and later by Aurangzeb. Before destruction it was said to
be 150 feet in hight and covered with the finest specimens of Hindu
sculpture.
Even today, three centuries after the last desecration and
desecration, broken stone lintel scarvings and architectural tit bits
can be seen strewn all arround in temple premises.
The temple was restored by the Hada Chatrasal of Bundi.
